Why Tenterden’s market is special

This Kentish market town turns its historic High Street into a glowing festive corridor. Independent boutiques spill onto the pavements, while more than 80 chalets offer local produce, English wine, artisan gin, handicrafts and handmade decorations. The 2026 market runs from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November, with live music and family entertainment across the High Street.

Tenterden’s Christmas switch-on remains the highlight, with a lantern parade, community carols around the town tree and steam whistles from the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The market has a strong “shop local” ethos—many traders are from the Weald and Romney Marsh.

Getting there

By train & bus

Head to Ashford International or Headcorn by Southeastern rail, then transfer to Stagecoach bus 293/295 which drops on Tenterden High Street.

By car

Use the A28 (Ashford to Hastings) or A262 (Tunbridge Wells). Parking is available at Station Road, Bridewell Lane and Recreation Ground car parks, plus temporary overflow signed on arrival.

Steam railway

The Kent & East Sussex Railway runs “Santa Specials” and Christmas Gin trains from Tenterden Town Station—book ahead if you want to pair steam heritage with your market visit.

Accessibility

High Street is mostly level with dropped kerbs; accessible toilets are located at Recreation Ground and Station Road car parks. Quiet hours are scheduled on weekday mornings.

Top things to do

  • Children’s village: Storytelling tipi, vintage rides and Santa’s cabin on the Recreation Ground.

Make a weekend of it

Explore the Kentish Weald: ride the Kent & East Sussex Railway to Bodiam Castle, visit Chapel Down vineyard, or head to nearby Rye and Hastings for coastal winter walks. The Smallhythe Place National Trust property (Ellen Terry’s cottage) runs festive tours in December.
